Box Jump with Weight Vest = VERY EFFECTIVE
by Coach Dave Andrews
I hear you on the box jumps. We use them a lot with our athletes and we jump onto boxes with the padded top. No injury issues when you don't make it. It is also a good way to measure progression. Even with the hip flexor factor, as long as the athlete is continuing to land on higher boxes they are usually progressing their vertical jump as well.
Also, agree with you about the weight vest. We rarely add more than 25 pounds regardless of how strong the athlete is and have seen amazing results for standing vertical jump from just using this exercise and a lot of strength work a'la DeFranco. It is simple but for standing vertical jump, it works.
