Anyway, Joel will be adding new content on a regula basis and with his knowledge and experience as a competitive track and field athlete and coach there is going to be some excellent insights.

The new blog is http://www.just-fly-sports.com/

I recommend saving it to your favorites today.

Jun 20, The Essence of Vertical Jump Training

Here is a nice summary of the essence of vertical jump training from a guy who is a little out there, but very switched on - Andrew Darqui. This quote sums up exactly how I feel about the vertical jump industry and also about how to go about learning how to jump higher.

"the main issue with most programs is that they "promise results in 12 weeks, crap like that.. athletic performance improvement training is a long road, one in which you can use a variety of protocols to achieve gains.

To really make huge gains, there needs to be a slow & somewhat steady progression of strength, over a long period, while making sure to always be practicing important sport specific drills/sport itself & generally keeping fitness high.

Reactive/rebounding work needs to be incorporated and progressed, and body composition needs to stay decent, that way you can lean up quick if you've put on a few excess pounds of fat from extra caloric intake which is sometimes needed to keep pushing that strength up.

If you have the long term mindset for gains, you'll make way more progress than the short term gain trainees. Long term gain mindset means when you hit roadblocks, you're prepared for them, you're prepared to attack and keep pushing.

The short term gain trainees see their hopes fizzle out, they lose interest, lose much of what they gained if anything, and then long down the road get re-motivated for the same cycle of short term motivation -> fizzle out.

You have got to get very very strong relative to your bodyweight, got to improve fitness/work capacity, got to eat good/maintain a decent body composition specific to your goals, got to incorporate reactive/rebounding progressions, got to sprint/jump/play sport, and definitely you've got to never quit and to keep pushing.. that's all there is really."

You can read more of Andrews thoughts at his excellent training forum Adarq.org

Mar 28, Athletic Propulsion Labs Price Drop

Athletic Propulsion Labs who make the shoes that were banned by the NBA have dropped their price from a ridiculous $300 per pair to a more reasonable $195.

I am still to be convinced that these shoes will actually help you jump higher, but at least now you won't feel so bad if it turns out to be a scam.

And even though $195 is still a lot to pay for basketball shoes, these do at least look great. They have a new all green design that I think looks pretty awesome.
